Image is of Frederick Rainbow in a dark frock coat with captain’s shoulder straps and dark military vest. Under image is a period ink inscription that reads “CAPTAIN F. RAINBOW.”
Image has good clarity and contrast. Mount has clipped corners with a pin hole at upper center and paper has darkened some with age.
Reverse has no photographer’s imprint. There is a partial green 2 cent tax stamp dating the image from 1864-1866. There is also a good amount of collector information in pencil.
Frederick Lee Rainbow was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania in 1842. He enlisted in Company E, 70th New York on June 22, 1861 and was made Fife Major but the next day his assignment was changed and he was listed as a private in Company E. Rainbow became a re-enlisted veteran on December 30, 1863 and was transferred to the 86th New York Infantry on June 22, 1864.
During his time with the 70th the regiment saw action at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Savage’s Station, 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.
From June 22, 1864 Rainbow served with Company E, 86th New York and was promoted captain on December 15, 1864. He was mustered out on June 27, 1865.
After the war Rainbow lived in Fair Oakes, Pennsylvania and was a member of the Duquesne Post #259 of the GAR. He died in 1917 and is buried in Sewickley Cemetery in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. [AD]
