Image has 1st Lieutenant Terrence J. McDonald posed in front of a painted backdrop of a stone arch looking into a yard with a latticework fence and vines. He wears a dark kepi with infantry hunting horn with regimental number on the front of the crown, a dark frock coat with 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps and light trousers. McDonald also wears his sash and sword belt with attached sword. His leather gauntlet covered hand obscures the hilt of his sword.

Image has good clarity and contrast. Paper and mount have only very light surface dirt around the edges.

Reverse has period pencil ID that reads “T. JOSEPH MCDONALD, 1st LIEUT. CO. F, 178 N.Y. V.” There is no photographer’s mark. There is a small modern pencil notation saying that the image is from “MARY WALKER ALBUM.”

Terrence Joseph McDonald was born in Ireland in 1840. When he came to the United States is not known. He is listed as being 22 years old when he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company F, 178th New York on August 23, 1863. During his service McDonald also served with Companies I, C and E. He was promoted Captain on January 22, 1865 and was mustered out the following May 15.

The 178th New York served in the defenses of Washington before being sent to the Department of Tennessee and then the Department of the Gulf. The regiment was in 35 engagements. Their heaviest loss came at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana on April 9, 1864 losing 3 killed, 17 wounded and 16 prisoners.

Terrence J. McDonald died in Jersey City, New Jersey on November 29, 1913 while serving as the GAR Department of New Jersey Commander. He is buried in Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City.  [ad]
