Image is of Charles Garrard in a dark civilian suit with a stripped bowtie.
Clarity and contrast are good. Mount has a small tear at bottom. There is also some light surface dirt.
Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for C. C. TAYLOR…WARREN, OHIO. At top is a light period pencil ID that reads “SERGT. C. T. GARRARD CO. K, 6TH US CAVALRY (VETERAN.)” At bottom is “HOME-VIENNA, OHIO” also in period pencil.
Charles T. Garrard (also spelled on the roster as Ganard) first enlisted as a private in Company H, 7th Ohio Infantry on October 21, 1861. During his time with the 7th it saw action at Port Republic, Cedar Mountain and Antietam. He was discharged on October 22, 1862.
Gerrard next enlisted as corporal in Company K, 6th US Cavalry and was later promoted to sergeant. His date of muster out is not known.
The 6th US Cavalry served with the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Shenandoah. They were engaged at Brandy Station, Upperville, Fairfield, Gettysburg and North Anna.
During its service the regiment lost 3 officers and 156 enlisted men killed, died of wounds and disease. [ad]
