Image is a three-quarter standing view of Gustavus R. Pratt posed leaning on a balustrade. He wears a dark commercial sack coat with oak leaves only on his shoulders, no straps. He also wears dark military vest and matching trousers.

Clarity and contrast are excellent. Mount and paper are clean.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for BLACK & CASE …BOSTON & NEWPORT, R.I. Bottom has nice period ink inscription “SURGEON G. P. PRATT 19 MASS.”  Reverse also has a green cancelled tax stamp with a clear cancellation mark of “MARCH 24, 1865.”

Gustavus P. Pratt was born in Cohasset, Massachusetts on February 14, 1840. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1860 and in 1863 he graduated from Boston Medical College.

In 1863 he was appointed assistant surgeon of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry  and later made brigade surgeon before serving with both the 19th and 20th Massachusetts as surgeon. He was mustered out at Munson’s Hill, Virginia on June 30, 1865.

In 1865 he openedran a drug store in Chicago but returned to his hometown of Cohasset in 1867 where he practiced medicine until he death. He was a member of the George W. Perry Post #31 of the GAR.

Pratt died in Cohasset on April 29, 1887 and is buried there Cohasset Cemetery.     [AD]
