John W. Cruikshank was born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and later moved to Troy, Ohio.
On April 27, 1861 he was commissioned captain of Company H, 20th Ohio Infantry and just under a month later on May 23, 1861 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel however he was mustered out at Columbus, Ohio on August 18, 1861.
Cruikshank died in Troy, Ohio in 1880.
