CDV view of a little girl posed wearing a military cloak and drum. She wears a dark dress with a dark hat that is decorated with an ostrich plume and a wide ribbon. Her cloak is also dark with two light parallel stripes running along the boarder. She stands with her drumsticks in her hand as if playing the drum. The bottom of the mount is printed with the following “FANNIE VIRGINIA CASSEOPIA LAWRENCE. The text continues “A REDEEMED SLAVE CHILD, 5 YEARS OF AGE. REDEEMED IN VIRGINIA BY CATHARINE S. LAWRENCE; BAPTIZED IN BROOKLYN, AT PLYMOUTH CHURCH, BY HENRY WARD BEECHER, MAY, 1863.” Beneath this description is the publication information which dates the image to 1863. The image is clear with good contrast but there is moderate surface dirt throughout. The reverse has photographers imprint for KELLOGG BROTHERS…HARTFORD, CONN.
