Nice unidentified view of an officer wearing a dark frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and dark trousers with a thin light leg stripe. At his waist is his sword belt with rectangular eagle plate minus the sword. The subject is posed in front of a painted backdrop of pastoral scene. Of interest is the slouch hat he holds in his left hand. The hat is adorned with an Officer’s hat cord and the numeral “12” surmounted by a 3rd Corps badge. Image is clear and clean with great contrast. Mount corners are slightly clipped. Reverse has photographers imprint for H. P. ROSS, GROTON JUNCTION, MASS.
The 12th Massachusetts Infantry was with the Army of the Potomac for almost its entire service. During that time they were part of the 3rd, 1st and 5th Corps. They were with the 3rd from June to September of 1862.
