The unknown subject of this photo wears a dark frock coat with matching trousers. On his coat are 2nd Lieutenant shoulder straps and at his waist is his sword belt with a rectangular eagle plate, sash and sword scabbard. His Model 1850 Foot Officer’s sword is drawn and is displayed point down, in his right hand. Stuck in the officer’s sword belt is a large Colt pistol. Next to him on a podium is his forage cap with an embroidered Infantry hunting horn insignia on the front with two numbers at center but these cannot be discerned. The image is clear with good contrast and very clean.
The reverse is inscribed in period ink “FOR MASTER CHARLES A. DUDLEY TAKEN BALTIMORE CITY JANY 1ST 1862.” Under the recipient’s name written in modern pencil is “HAS PISTOL AND SWORD.”
