This CDV shows an unknown musician holding his clarinet and standing at the position of “SHOULDER ARMS” or “ATTENTION.” He stands straight and erect with his arms hanging by his side. With his right hand he supports the bell of his clarinet which is held vertical in the same way a soldier would hold a musket when at “SHOULDER ARMS.”

The subject wears a dark nine-button frock coat with a pair of brush epaulettes on each shoulder. The only piping on the coat is a tombeau made out of a single piece of cord on each cuff and a band of white or gold cloth around the base of the collar. Otherwise the cut of the coat looks to be very much like the Federal issue frock coat.

The subject also wears light colored trousers and a waist belt with a plate that looks to be a Model 1851 NCO sword belt plate but that cannot be determined for sure. This waist belt also supports a Model 1840 musician’s sword and scabbard.

On his head the subject wears a shako with a large white plume. The shako plate looks to be a lyre made out of gold bullion thread on a dark felt background outlined in gold bullion thread.

The image is clear and clean with good contrast.

The reverse of the image is blank except for some collector information in pencil that reads “FROM LOUISVILLE, KY ALBUM. ID: MUELLER. NO FIRST NAME.”
