This CDV shows a rather older looking staff officer seated in a chair posed with his hands in his lap.
The subject wears a dark commercially manufactured sack coat with an exterior breast pocket and 1st Lieutenant shoulder straps. A close look at the rank field of the left shoulder strap does reveal an insignia but it is too small to discern. He also wears a matching dark military vest and dark trousers with a thin light colored officer’s leg stripe. On his head is a dark slouch hat with a “US” in wreath insignia denoting him as a staff officer.
The reverse of the image has a back mark of W. J. MOULTON, ELMIRA, N.Y. Reverse also has a blue 2 cent revenue tax stamp.
Image is in good condition with good contrast. There is only some light surface dirt from age and storage.
