CDV is a vignette bust view of a young bearded Union artilleryman. The subject is wearing a dark artillery shell jacket with a dark slouch hat that displays crossed cannons surmounted by a Rifleman’s insignia.
The image has two slits cut in the mount, one at the top edge and one at the bottom. There is also the number “1948” in red pencil at bottom left corner of the mount. The slits and the number show that this photo is from the “dead letter” office of the US Postal Service. Photographs enclosed in undeliverable letters were mounted on a board and numbered. The letter was marked with a corresponding number and filed. The board with the mounted photographs was prominently displayed so patrons coming into the Post Office could recognize the soldier and perhaps know who the letter was meant for.
The reverse is blank except for a period ink inscription at top that reads “WHO IS THAT?” There is no back mark.
Image is in good condition but has become dirty over the years. [ad]
