CDV shows a young 2^nd Lieutenant seated in a chair with his legs crossed and his slouch hat on his lap.

The officer has a look of clean grooming about him and wears a uniform that also looks immaculate. The subject wears a dark frock coat buttoned only at the throat. Beneath this is a matching dark vest with two buttons opened at middle exposing the white of his shirt. He also wears matching dark trousers with the thin lighter colored officer’s leg stripe. On his lap is what looks to be a Model 1858 dress hat with the crown creased and one side of the brim turned up. The upturned brim is anchored by a gold bullion thread eagle done on an oval of black velvet.

The image is clean and clear with good contrast.

The reverse has a photographer’s imprint for HOAG & QUICKS, CINCINNATI, OHIO. Also on the reverse in pencil is the name “STOMS.” It is hard to tell how old the inscription is but a quick search on an on-line database reveals two officers named Stoms in the 39^th Ohio. One is Horace and the other is Willard. Both men started as enlistedmen and were later commissioned. More research may reveal a good ID.  [ad]
