Image shows two very young boys, perhaps 6 or 7 at most posed in front of a pastoral painted backdrop. Both of the boys wear the same uniform and are probably from a military school.

The boy on the left is the drummer. He wears a dark kepi with an indistinct insignia on the front, a dark jacket that appears to be triple-breasted with horizontal piping between the buttons and swallows nests on each shoulder and matching dark baggy trousers. His feet cannot be seen as he is wearing snare drum that is half his height. The little fellows arms are crossed in front of him with his drum sticks tucked under his arm. Visible with a loop, just above the edge of his drum is a rectangular waist belt plate of a spread-winged eagle surrounded by stars within the edged border. The drum has a painted decoration but it is barely visible on one side.

The second boy wears a uniform identical to the first but there are some minor differences. On this fellows left chest he wears a cockade of some kind and on each shoulder is an officer’s shoulder strap. He wears a sash and sword belt with rectangular NCO plate and boots. His hands rest on the hilt of a drawn sword, point down.

Image is bright with good clarity and contrast.

Reverse has imprint for SPENCER (D.H.) of HUDSON, MICH.  [ad]
