This carte-de-visite shows a very young Union cavalryman posed next to a chair in a photographer’s studio, wearing his mounted jacket and forage cap, and holding a small pistol at his side. The card has a Norristown, PA, photographer’s backmark and a tax stamp, dating the photo to the Fall of 1864 or later, when taxes were levied on certain luxury goods. Our soldier has the lower part of his service jacket unbuttoned, showing the typical army issued high-waisted light blue trousers. There is some minor spotting to the image, including one small spot on the young man’s breast, but the photo has good clarity and detail. The pistol is not a martial weapon and is likely a photographer’s prop lent to improve the young soldier’s military air. This is a very telling view showing the young age of many soldiers and any photo of soldier displaying a weapon is uncommon. The top corners of the card were rounded slightly to make it easier to slip into the page of a photograph album. [SR]
