Nice clean CDV showing a Captain seated by a cloth covered table. On the table is a dark slouch hat adorned with a hat cord and a stamped brass number “9” on the front of the crown. The subject wears a dark frock coat and matching dark trousers. The coat has a clearly visible exterior watchpocket at the lower right chest. The light background of the Captain’s shoulder straps and the light leg stripes seem to imply infantry light blue piping.

Image is very clear with excellent contrast. The card and paper are very clean.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for N. C. SANBORN…LOWELL, MASS. There is also a blue 2 cent tax stamp.

The 9^th Massachusetts was organized in Boston on June 11, 1861. The regiment served with the 3^rd and 5^th Corps of the Army of the Potomac seeing action on the Peninsula, 2^nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Bethesda Church and Petersburg.

The regiment suffered heavily in several battles but their heaviest loss came at the Wilderness where they lost 29 killed, 133 wounded, 3 captured and 1 missing. The 9^th’s overall tally in killed, died of wounds and disease during the war was 18 officers and 260 enlisted men. Truly a hard fighting regiment.    [ad]
