Item Code: 1054-763

This unidentified officer is posed leaning against a small column on which his dark forage cap rests on top of a book. With a loop it is possible to seen the infantry hunting horn insignia on the front of the cap with the number “10” clearly visible at center.

The subject wears a dark frock coat with shoulder straps and matching dark trousers with a thin light leg stripe. The contrast of the image is good but not sharp enough to see the rank field on the shoulder strap. The subject also wears his sash and belt with rectangular eagle plate and sword. Again, a close look with a loop shows it to be a militia sword with crested knights head pommel, chain guard and either eagle wings of elliptical shaped cross guard.

Image has good clarity and good contrast. Paper and mount are good however the top of the mount appears to be lightly trimmed.

Reverse has a photographer’s imprint for MANCHESTER BRO’S…PROVIDENCE, R.I.

The 10th Rhode Island Infantry was organized in Providence on May 26, 1862 and was assigned to the Military District of Washington. The regiment served for three months in the forts around Washington, D.C. and was mustered out at Providence on September 1, 1862.  [ad]
