Sixth-plate sized view in full gutta-percha case with patriotic mat. The subject of this ambrotype is shown from the knees up. He stands in front of a painted backdrop of what looks like the Hudson Highlands just north of New York City. The soldier is wearing a cavalry shell jacket with light trousers, shoulder scales, gauntlets and sword belt with rectangular plate. In his right hand he holds his Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber and supports it with his left hand. By his side, attached to his belt, is an empty scabbard. His forage cap with crossed saber insignia sits on the post of a railing that runs behind him. The shoulder scales, buttons, belt plate and guard of the saber are tinted gold. Contrast is good and the clarity is excellent. Patriotic mat has US flags in top corners with a ship at lower left and cannon with flags at lower right. Mat also bears the motto “CONSTITUTION AND UNION.” Gutta-percha case is in excellent condition with purple velvet lining, brass hinges and a scrollwork outer design.
