The subjects of this half-plate ambrotype appear to be a family of two brothers and two sisters. Both of the soldiers appear to be in their late teens or early twenties and have enough of a resemblance to be brothers. They are posed seated while their sisters stand behind them. Both soldiers wear artillery shell jackets, white gloves and hold their forage caps in their laps. Their caps are displayed in such a way that the crossed cannons and number “1” attached on top are visible. The photographer has touched the soldier’s buttons and cap insignia with gilt paint.

Of the two women standing the woman at left appears to be the older sister. She wears her hair in ringlets and looks to have a veil or some kind of covering on the top of her head. She wears a dark dress with a lace collar and white undersleeves. At her throat is a cameo and around her waist is a thin belt. On each hand she wears a lace fingerless glove. She is posed with one hand resting on each of the two soldiers.

The younger woman standing at right has her hair cut short or gathered in a snood. She wears a dark dress with a white collar and white undersleeves. She also wears fingerless lace gloves on her hands. She is posed with one hand on the shoulder of the soldier nearest her and with the other she holds his hand.

The image is a little on the dark side but it is clear and clean. The plate comes housed in a full frame and mat but no case. The brass frame is somewhat dirty from age and storage. A modern piece of heavy black paper has been slid into the back of the frame so the image can more easily be seen.

Looking at all these young faces one can only hope that both these soldiers made it through the war.
