Both images are very clear and clean.

The first image is of a woman who looks to be in her thirties seated at a table. She stares directly into the camera. The subject wears a black dress with white lace collar and black half-gloves on her hands which are folded in her lap.

Image is clean and clear and near flawless. It comes with a stamped brass scrollwork frame and mat.

The soldier opposite her also appears to be in his thirties. He wears a light colored jacket with high collar and cloth epaulettes. Five three-piece buttons are visible down the front of his jacket but no details can be discerned on the button faces. Jacket also has a horizontal slit pocket on the breast.

At first glance this soldier appears to be Confederate but he is most likely he is a Union soldier in a militia or light colored jacket which was often the case early in the war.

Image is near perfect except for one small area under the subjects arm near the 4th and 5th buttons. Apparently when the photographer darkened the back of the image he missed a spot. The image is housed in a patriotic mat of US flags, cannons and at center bottom the date “JULY 4, 1776.”

The union case is in excellent condition. It is free of chips and cracks and has both brass hinges. The decoration is a patriotic motif with a raised scrollwork design with patriotic shields in each corner. At center is a spread-winged eagle over a scroll that reads “CONSTITUTION AND THE LAWS.”

Nice quality image.
