CASED 9th PLATE AMBROTYPE OF A SERGEANT

Item Code: 1053-43C

In this image a seated sergeant with hands folded in his lap is posed in front of a painted backdrop. He has long hair, neatly combed, and chin whiskers, gazes directly into the camera, and most unusual for the period, shows a half smile. The photographer has delicately tinted his cheeks red and has gilded his buttons, and chevrons. He wears what seems to be a non-regulation nine-button jacket with a low collar and three buttons on each cuff. If the photographer’s coloring is to be taken literally, our sergeant is in the cavalry or perhaps the engineers since his chevrons and cuff piping are yellow.

The image has very good clarity and tones. The mat is pretty fancy, with an oval opening, but a geometric six-pointed star with floral motifs framing him. The case needs some TLC, but is all there and is the style with gilt blindstamped leather and a plain white facing pad that imitates a miniature book when closed.  [sr]
