The young man in this image is seated with one arm resting on a table. He is shown wearing a mounted services jacket, indicating he is in the cavalry or artillery. The image is clear, but shows some minor solarization around the perimeter and at bottom across his thighs. He looks intently off to the viewer’s left, and wears a slight moustache, perhaps to look a little older than he was.
The mat framing the image is filled with patriotic motifs. An arc of stars curves overhead at top center, flanked at either side by a liberty cap on a pole, what seem to be bayonets on musket muzzles and a U.S. flag. A sailing ship is at lower left and a cannon with crossed U.S. flags behind it is at right. A stack of cannonballs and a drum flank a scroll at bottom center reading “July 4, 1776,” and a ribbon reading “Constitution and Union” appears to run down the left edge of the image and reappear running up the right.
The case is all there, but separated along the hinge. The red facing pad is embossed with floral motifs. The image has an effective presentation and is the type of thing a waiting family at home would display. [sr]
