Both images are sixth plate tintypes. Both images are of the same individual and both appear to have been taken at the same time in a studio. In the first image the cavalryman is standing wearing a cavalry shell jacket and enlistedman's trousers. The jacket appears to be an eleven-button jacket without piping. On his head is a foliage hat with a Cavalry insignia worn with the drags pointing down. Around his waist is a belt with a cavalry belt plate. In the belt are a Colt and a Savage revolver. In his right hand is a M1840 cavalry saber. The unidentified cavalryman is wearing a chin beard. The second photo is identical to the first except he is wearing a greatcoat. Both images are tinted in gold and blue. The case is a gutta-percha case with brass oval mats. Both images have a crease in the middle but are not flaking.
