These two tintypes are in good condition and have been framed together in a modern mat and frame. As far as is known there is no connection between the two images. Both look to be sixth plates in size and have excellent clarity and contrast.

The first image shows a Union Lieutenant or Captain seated between a younger man and woman. The civilians may be the soldier’s adult children, his siblings or his wife and son. The unknown officer wears a dark frock coat with matching dark trousers. On his head is his forage cap with a “US” in a wreath. The wreath has a slight outline of gilt as do the edges of his shoulder straps and the buttons down the front of his coat. On his hands he wears what look to be calf skin gauntlets. At his waist is his sash and sword belt with a two piece tongue and wreath buckle. The design on the buckle has been obliterated by a dab of photographers gilt. Between his legs the officer holds a presentation grade M1840 Artillery saber with raised decorative panels on the scabbard and an eagle head pommel on the hilt. Just above the eagle head pommel is a disk which upon closer inspection is revealed to be an ID badge of some kind sewn to the chest of the frock coat. A closer look also reveals that the sword drops are not the usual leather but are actually linked chain which is another hallmark of high class blades. The surface of the image has a light oval outline showing that it was once housed in a case.

The second tintype shows two men, one seated and one standing. The seated subject wears a heavy dark civilian overcoat and light trousers. The standing subject wears a dark nine-button “roundabout” jacket with 1st Sgt. Chevrons, a matching military vest and light trousers. Protruding from under the collar is a thin, stiff looking bow tie. Attached to the soldier’s chest is a larger than normal 2nd Corps badge. Under magnification the badge appears to have a cloth center with a two digit number. There is nothing anywhere in the image to hint to an ID or unit.

The frame meas. approx. 9.75 x 7.25 inches and has an off-white mat. Item is ready to hang on the wall of your collection room or office.
