Image is full standing view of two Union soldiers standing at the position of “PARADE REST.” Both men are dressed alike. They wear forage caps, dark frock coats with lighter trousers and boots. Both men wear their cartridge box on the sling and both wear their waist belts with bayonet scabbard. Each man is holding the muzzle area of a three-banded rifle musket that looks to be of the Springfield pattern. Both have the bayonets fixed as is proper for “PARADE REST.” The photographer has touched each soldier’s forage cap buckle, cartridge box breast plate, buttons, waist belt plate and bayonet scabbard tip with gilt paint.
Image is clear but the contrast is dark. The subjects look to be standing in front of a canvas wall like the inside of a tent. The image was probably made in a camp and the photographer did not have enough light to work with.
The image comes with the brass mat and frame in a split cloth case.
