Full-standing view of a Union cavalryman with his sword drawn and standing at the position of “PARADE REST.” The subject wears a forage cap with upturned visor, dark sack coat with light colored trousers. At his waist is his belt with empty scabbard attached. Visible above his left hand is a Colt revolver stuck in his belt.
The subject is posed in front of a painted backdrop that has a fence with a soldier and cannon along the right edge and a tree along a road with a wagon going by on the left edge. The middle background is partially blocked by the subject but there appears to be a set of stairs leading possibly to a building or perhaps it is a terraced field. The distant background appears to have tents or bushes dotting the landscape. Either way it is an unusual backdrop.
The contrast and clarity are good. There is an outline of a brass mat that is now gone. There is no case.
Very nice image of a fellow who looks to be a veteran cavalryman.
