This tintype is a 1/9 plate size specimen of early photography and shows a young and uniformed Civil War soldier posed in a waist-high seated view in front of a photographer's drop cloth. The soldier is identified as Alonzo Tuttle of Athens, Maine. The eighteen year old Tuttle enlisted in the service as a private on November 20, 1861 and was mustered into Company A, 13th ME Volunteer infantry the same day. Tuttle served with the unit until he died on May 20, 1862 at Ship Island, Mississippi from unknown causes.
In the image, the soldier wears a dark sack coat with the top two buttons secured. Worn beneath his frock coat is a gray / brown shirt that is buttoned to the top. No rank devices are visible on the coat. A chassuer-style kepi is visible on Tuttle's head. From his seated position, Tuttle holds his head erect as he looks directly at the camera from his clean-shaven face. His left arm rests on an adjacent sidetable and his right leg is crossed over his left knee. Image surface is mostly free from scratches or blemishes. A small modern paper tag is taped to the backside of the tin and has a handwritten ID of "A Tuttle / 13th Me Inf". A fine, Maine Civil War soldier's identified tintype.
