GEM SIZED CASED TINTYPE WITH ATTRIBUTED ID TO 13TH NEW YORK LIGHT ARTILLERY SOLDIER

$125.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: P13597

Gem sized tintype in a full case with repaired hinge and decorative brass frame and mat. Image meas. approx. 2.00 x 2.00 inches.

Bust image shows a young man, perhaps in his early 20’s at most, wearing a high crowned forage cap and a dark artillery or cavalry shell jacket. The high collar and the two buttons on each side of it are clearly seen. Coat is open to reveal a light colored shirt and bowtie.

Image has good clarity and contrast. There is a small scratch in the emulsion alongside the subject’s nose. Case is of white leather with a geometric decoration and a hinge repaired with brown cloth. Brass clasp still remains on front. Sides are of wood veneer, spine is covered with black silk material and box edges are painted gold to look like leaves of a gilded book.  Interior front over is lined with cream-colored polished cloth.

Case compartment under the image is bare wood that bears a handwritten, pencil note on it that reads, "P. BURNS / 13 ARTY".  Backside of the tintype also bears a handwritten pencil note, “Pat / Burns / 13 AT”.

Image is attributed to Corporal Patrick Burns of the 13th New York Light Artillery who enlisted on September 12, 1861, was wounded at 2nd Bull Run and went missing at Gettysburg but later turned up in a hospital. He was mustered out at New York City on June 28, 1865. The only discrepancy is that the record says Burns was 33 years old when he enlisted and the subject in this photo is much younger than that.  [ad]
