Nice, crisp, clear, clean bust image of a young soldier wearing a dark sack coat, forage cap and bow tie with cheeks that are lightly tinted.
Removing the image from its case reveals two 5 cent tax stamps attached to the reverse.
Tucked inside the image is a slip of paper with “THEODORE BARTHOLF” written on it in old, but not period, ink. Image is housed in a bright decorative mat and frame. All is contained in a gutta-percha case with very nice geometric designs and scrolls on the exterior. Case has one minor chip on one edge. Interior has green felt pad.
Theodore Bartholf was born in Chemung, New York about 1846. He is listed as being 18 years old when he enlisted in Company B, of the 22nd New York Cavalry on February 22, 1865. At the time he was described as being 5’ 10” tall with blue eyes, light brown hair and light complexion. He was employed as a miller.
By the time Bartholf reached his regiment it was serving in North Carolina and Bartholf may have seen his first and only action at Goldsboro a month later but we do not know for sure.
Private Bartholf was mustered out at Winchester, Virginia on August 1, 1865.
After the war it appears that Bartholf married and moved around a bit having lived in Minnesota and Louisiana. On December 27, 1911 he entered the Home for Disabled Soldiers at Bath in Steuben County, New York. He died there two years later on July 4, 1913.
This image came in with another ninth-plate tintype ID’d as Theodore’s brother Marion. [ad]
