Nice, clean, clear bust image of a young soldier wearing a dark frock coat and forage cap with cheeks that are lightly tinted. Contrast is a bit dark but all details are discernable.

Tucked inside the image is a slip of paper with “MARION BARTHOLF” written on it in old, but not period, ink. Image is housed in a bright decorative patriotic mat decorated with flags, drums, cannons and a scroll that reads “THE UNION NOW AND FOREVER.” Ornate brass frame is also present. All is contained in a gutta-percha case with very nice raised geometric designs and scrolls on the exterior. Interior has red felt pad.

Marion Bartholf was born in Elmira, Chemung County, New York on April 5, 1841.

On November 22, 1861 he enlisted as a Private in the Regular Army and was assigned to Company D, 14th US Infantry. At the time of his enlistment he was described as being 20 years old, with blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, standing 5’ 9 ½’ tall and by profession was a farmer.

While with the 14th US Marion saw action on the Peninsula and was wounded in the leg at Gaines Mill. How long he was absent is not known. During Marion’s time the regiment also saw action at 2nd Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

On August 19, 1864 during the Second Battle of Weldon Railroad Marion Bartholf was wounded. He was eventually taken to McViegh Hospital in Alexandria where he died on December 23, 1864. His body was returned to New York where he was buried in Old Second Street Cemetery, Elmira, New York.
