These very unique tintypes measure 5” x 6 ¾”. Each was color tinted by the photographer. Both images are in decorative period paper frames which are marked in pencil at the bottom with the photographer’s name, “BY A. F. MATTHEWS- VALLEY FORGE-PA 1896”. Images are clear with good contrast. Slight oxidation is present on edges.
First image features a field with three cattle, a horse, and a sheep. In the background is fencing and trees. Beyond that are the road and a house. This appears to be at a corner, and one can view more houses at the far left.
Next image features three people standing outside by a sled which has been decorated with flowers and two U.S. flags. To the right a dog is sitting. In the background on both sides are buildings. The gentleman who stands to the left is wearing a light colored coat, vest, trousers and hat, with a flower in his lapel. The lady standing behind the sled and the African-American lady to the right are both wearing ruffled blouses with puffy sleeves. [sm]
