RARE NINTH-PLATE TINTYPE OF UNION CORPORAL WHO SURVIVED GUNSHOT TO THE FACE

$495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 526-79

Waist-up view of a Union Corporal. He wears a dark forage cap and shell jacket with corporal stripes. The insignia on his cap and buttons down the front of the shell jacket were tinted gold by the photographer. This is a very unique image as this young man obviously survived a horrific gunshot wound to the face and survived to return to duty. The entrance wound is just below the eye, causing it to sag. The vast majority of images of wounded men show them in hospital settings, where they were photographed for medical purposes. It is rare to see an image of a wounded soldier who returned to service.

Image is clear with good contrast. Comes housed in a split leatherette case with embossed red velvet lining and brass frame. Case is in very good condition other than being split.
