QUARTER PLATE TINTYPE OF AN ARMED UNION SOLDIER

Seated view of a young beardless soldier posed in front of a painted backdrop of a camp scene with “A” tents, Sibley tents and working soldiers.

The subject is seated facing the camera straight on and holding his Model 1855 musket between his legs. He wears a wide brimmed slouch hat towards the back of his head causing the brim to hide the crown, a dark frockcoat and light trousers. At his waist is his belt with an upside down oval “US” plate and a cap box with some kind of inlaid button on the outer flap. He also wears his cartridge box with sling and breast plate. He is also wearing his haversack but the strap has slipped off his shoulder so it actually goes around his waist and the top of the bag is trapped under his cartridge box sling above the cap box. At first glance it looks like he has a book or handkerchief stuck under his belt but after magnification it can be seen to be his haversack.

Clarity and contrast is excellent. There is some creasing to the image, only noticeable if you look at it at an angle; could not get a good photograph of it. Mat has floral and scroll decoration with the usual stamped brass frame. Leather case is complete with a repaired hinge. Inner pad is of red velvet. Exterior decoration of the case is a floral design.

Very interesting image.  [ad]
