A cased sixth plate tintype photo with some presence, showing a young man wearing a fez with large tassel, zouave style jacket, vest, baggy trousers and gaiters. He is posed directly facing the camera with one foot forward as if ready to march forward and holds his fife across his chest with both hands, suggesting he is just about to raise it his lips and play. The base of a photographer’s headrest is visible at his feet. A painted backdrop behind him with a blank upper section sets off his figure nicely. A section of a rustic Adirondack fence in on the viewer’s right.
The clarity of the image is very good. There is a little emulsion damage to figure’s shoulder at right, the edge of his elbow, and across the knuckles of one hand, but it does not overly distract from the pleasing pose and content of the image. The presence of the Adirondack style fence suggests the image is slightly postwar, perhaps 1869-70.
The image has its glass, matt, and frame, and is cased in a leatherette case with a repaired hinge. The velvet facing pad has an embossed floral design. Likely red originally, it has faded slightly and shifted toward orange.
This is a strong image that stands out. [sr]
