UNION CASE WITH TWO SIXTH PLATE IMAGES - SOLDIER & WIFE

Item Code: 1054-168

Union case with an exterior floral decoration that is in good condition. Inside the case are a sixth-plate tintype of an older couple with a child and an ambrotype of a soldier and wife.

The ambrotype shows a soldier wearing a dark shell jacket and sky blue trousers. The jacket buttons are touched with gilt while the trousers appear to be lightly tinted. He stands beside a chair in which a young woman, presumably his wife, sits. She wears a dark plaid dress with white undersleeves and a white collar. At her waist is a dark belt. Both subjects have tinted cheeks and posed before a pastoral painted backdrop.

The image on the opposite side of the case is a tintype of an older couple with the woman holding a child in her lap. If one was forced to guess it would be assumed from facial features that the old couple are the parents of the soldier and the young one is their grandchild but anyone who knows for sure is long gone. The elderly man wears the usual dark suit, light shirt and dark bowtie with lighter trousers while the woman wears a polka dot dress. The child wears a plaid top with a plain white dress.

Both images have very good clarity and contrast. Both have the usual scalloped brass mat and frame.

Together they are a charming reminder of a wartime family. [ad]
