DOUBLE QUARTER-PLATE TINTYPE IN UNION CASE - YOUNG SOLDIER WITH BUGLE

$595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1054-85

Case contains two quarter plate images. The first is a seated view of a very young Union soldier seated in a chair in front of a plain white background. The soldier wears a dark forage cap with a matching dark enlisted man’s frock coat and light trousers. At his waist is a leather belt with a Model 1851 NCO plate. The subject holds a bugle complete with the cord, on his knee and cradles a Model 1840 musician’s sword in the crook of his other arm. Under magnification it appears the sword is attached to the belt by a frog.

Image is clear with fair to good contrast. Plate has some waviness to it in spots but nothing that hurts the image. There appears to be some stray gilt marks in the area of the forage cap. Bras mat and frame have a scroll and floral decoration.

The opposite side of the case contains a standing view of two young girls who look like sisters and are probably the sisters of the soldier in the opposite image. The girls appear to be between 7-9 years old and both wear matching off the shoulder dresses made of white lightly stripped material. Over the dresses they both wear what look to be dark aprons that cover the top of the dress and three-quarters of the skirt. Both are posed in front of a bucolic river scene.

Image has great contrast and clarity and is housed in a brass mat and frame that has a scrollwork decoration. Brass frame shows wear from the image being taken out of the case often.

The union case is in good shape with just a few minor edge chips. The exterior decoration is of geometric shapes with floral and grapes.  [ad]
