This waist-up view is a very clear photo of a young Union soldier staring at the camera with a wide-eyed look. He wears a narrow-brim non-regulation hat, but the absolutely regulation high-collared mounted jacket worn by artillery and cavalry troops. The clarity is great. We can make out the weave of his jacket trim and can even see the small stamped tin button of an issue army shirt underneath at his collar. The photographer applied some gold paint to his buttons, but just the thinnest touch of red to his cheeks and did not tint the trim of his jacket. Yellow piping and red both appear dark in period photos, but we think he has the air of an artilleryman about him. The photo is nicely cased in its original leatherette case with red facing pad, glass, mat and frame. [SR]
