FULL STANDING TINTED TINTYPE OF A UNION ZOUAVE

$450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1070-143

Image is an eighth-plate tintype housed in a sixth-plate union case but with the oval mat it is not obvious that the image is smaller than the case.

The image shows an unknown Union Zouave wearing a red kepi and red baggie trousers with a Zouave jacket that is not tinted but does have red tinted tombeaux and gilt buttons. The shape of the tombeaux is similar to that of the 5th New York but it is difficult to tell for sure.  The jacket is open to reveal a white shirt. Viewing the image outside of the case reveals that the subject is also wearing dark leather gaiters.

Image is clear with excellent contrast. Tinting is strong and well done.

Image comes housed in a union case with scrollwork decoration on the outside and a green crushed felt pillow on the interior. Exterior is excellent with minor surface dirt.

Brass mat is patriotic with spread-winged eagle at top flanked by flowing US flags with a cannon at bottom and an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” riband. Stamped brass frame has the usual scrollwork.

Very nice image. [ad]
