Clear waist-up image of a soldier wearing a light colored triple-breasted coat with a low collar that is decorated with one button on each side and one row of piping. Each cuff has a dark rectangle outlined with a thin border that is probably gold bullion or gold tape. Each cuff has four buttons. The subject also wears a Pattern 1872 shako with front plate and plume. At his waist is a white buff belt with a circular two piece plate. Cradled in one arm is a large “over the shoulder” or “backfire” horn. Subject’s cheeks are lightly tinted.

Though the image is clear and the contrast is good it is not sharp enough to make out the details on the shako plate or the buckle on the belt. Perhaps enlarging the image will allow a unit ID from the shako plate. Image is also clean.

Image has a plain scalloped brass mat with a floral decoration on the frame.

Photo is housed in a very nice Union case featuring a raised decoration at center of a mounted woman with one arm up holding a falcon or some other bird while two children run alongside the horse. This is surrounded by a deeply cut floral pattern. Case is clean and free of chips and cracks.

Interior pad is red crushed felt with a geometric design.  [ad]
