This piece is a section of cypress tree that meas. approx. 6.50 inches high x 5 inches wide with a large caliber round ball embedded in the wood at center. The wood has been halved to expose the bullet. The item comes attached to a dark stained wood base with a felt bottom.
Along with the item is a laminated tag that reads:
CYPRESS TREE WITH .69 CAL MINIBALL
FROM THE BATTLE OF OLUSTEE, FLORIDA FEB. 20 1864
5,500 UNION MEN AND 16 CANNON UNDER GENERAL TRUMAN A. SEYMOUR WENT UP AGAINST ALMOST EQUALED NUMBR OF CONFEDERATE FORCES UNDER GENERAL JOSEPH FINEGAN. UNION TROOPS HAD TO RETREAT WITH CASUALTIES AT 1,861 TO 946 FOR THE CONFEDERATES.”
Over the years Olustee has become a more well-known battle due to the presence of the 54th Massachusetts at the battle. Relics from this field are not often encountered.
