An excavated example of the U.S. Infantry “Eagle” breast plate recovered from Winchester, Virginia.
This plate exhibits heavy ground contact action, with the overall face of the plate and figure in worn condition. The patina is a combination of a deep, dark brownish surface with some greenish verdigris located on the raised surface details of the Eagle and rim areas. The reverse side shows a heavily pitted lead surface and loss of both iron wire loops.
