RELIC CONDITION CONFEDERATE FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 408-07

Here is a totally unmarked, heavily rusted, Confederate foot officer’s sword excavated from an unknown location sometime after the Civil War. This southern infantry officer’s sword follows a similar pattern of the Federal Model 1850-foot officer’s sword. But the steel specimen is crudely made with the blade featuring typical wavering flats, a spear-point tip, and an unstopped wide full that is some 22” long. Has no narrow fuller. Blade is intact but its surface is deeply pockmarked and pitted. True edge is rough but still sharp. No pad or washer present but two small metal shims are visible on each side of the ricasso and inserted into the hilt area to tighten the blade.

Grips are relic condition and retain only the spiraled, wood base handle with large portions of the handle missing. No leather or brass wire wrap remains on the grips. Blade tang is visible from the bottom grips. Entire blade wears a dark brown / rust coloring. The ornate, cast brass hilt and cross guard has acquired a pleasing mellow, bronze patina overall. The worn hilt features an ornate pattern of decorative flowers within a laurel leaf design on the guard’s outer band. Accumulated surface grime and dirt is still visible in recessed areas of the band’s floral motif. The plain, heavy, globular quillon is curved but appears never to have been bent over. Undecorated brass pommel, with its no-tiered cap, exhibits an unknown style of Phrygian pattern but similar to that used by sword outfitter / maker B. Douglas of South Carolina. The one-piece cast pommel is almost flat on top.

An unmarked, relic condition, Confederate infantry officer’s combat sword worthy of any relic collection.
