RARE, ‘DOUBLE-ENDED’ WHITWORTH SLUG EXCAVATED AT FORT FISHER, NORTH CAROLINA

$295.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: R20129

Rare Confederate double-ended, Whitworth .45 caliber lead slug recovered at Fort Fisher on the North Carolina coast at Wilmington some time after the assault. In excellent condition, this solid lead projectile measures 1 3/8” long and is the cylindrical, double-ended variety used in the British-produced, Confederate-imported Whitworth rifle. Only the Confederacy imported Whitworth rifles. Most recently, it has been suggested that this type Whitworth could have been used for the Vandenberg Volley gun, but no definitive research has come forward as yet.  Lead exhibits a smooth, hard surface that wears a dull gray, salt & pepper patina.  Slug surface is handpainted with the words, “FT FISHER / FORTRESS / REVOLVER / BULLET” in old black ink. Last two words (revolver bullet) are incorrect. Slug comes in its own clear, plastic tube case. A fine condition, rare piece of Civil War ammunition.
