Model 1855/1861 rifle butt plate embedded in a tree root that was recovered from the Wilderness in 1955. The plate is complete with both screws and is covered in rust. A section of tree root approx. 6.25 inches long has grown around the plate embedding it in the wood. Attached to the plate is an old yellow tape tag that reads “WILDERNESS MAY 1955.”
