An excavated example of the U.S. infantry cartridge box plate, circa 1864. This plate was recovered in the U.S. trench area at Petersburg, Virginia. The outer stamped brass shell shows a deep-dark surface patina, while the reverse leaded side exhibits a very heavily pitted surface and is also missing both of it’s original iron wire attachment loops. Other damages present are the various dents and dings located around the edges of the plate.
