Excavated example of the pre-Civil War /early war (1857-1863) period infantry waist belt plate with the stud (Puppy Paw) type attachments and hook tongue still present. This specimen shows the contractor’s name impressed into the reverse lead side of W.H. SMITH BROOKLYN N.Y. The plate was recovered in the vicinity of the Stafford Court House, Virginia. This plate exhibits bends, dents and scratches that would be expected of a dug item that has been exposed to ground action and the many years out in the elements. The reverse side shows the oxidized lead and the stamping of the contractor’s name and city address (See address above). A nice and complete early Civil War Federal Army, relic buckle.
