Fired shell in excellent condition. All the exposed iron is smooth and clean with no pitting or chipping. The lead cup sabot is still firmly attached and shows very pronounced signs of rifling from having been fired. The fuse is a Britten percussion fuse that has broken into two pieces, the cap and the plunger. These two pieces make for a good display to show how the fuse worked. It appears that at one time the fuse was glued back in place but it is better displayed as is. The side of the shell also has a small collector’s mark that consists of a black “80” on a small white oval.
This shell was recovered at the site of the battle of Cedar Mountain, also known as Cedar Run, which was fought August 9, 1862 by troops under the command of Stonewall Jackson and Nathaniel Banks.
