This shell was cast and then loaded with case shot through a hole on the side which is now plugged with lead, hence the name “side-loader.” The body of this shell is mostly smooth with light pitting and rust. The iron sabot is gone due to chipping which is common on these shells. Some of the chipping extends to the lower body of the shell. Center of base has typical mold dimple as found on Confederate shells. Nose has original copper fuse plug.
Area of recovery is not known.
