The body of this shell is almost completely covered by the lead sabot which is in good fired condition. The sabot is complete except for a chip out of the top edge that meas. approx. 2.00 x 1.50 inches. The base of the sabot displays the imprint of the lands and grooves of the gun that fired it. The patent date of “Nov. 13, 1855” is impressed into the bottom of the sabot but only “PATEN…” is visible.

The iron nose section of the shell protruding above the sabot is pitted and chipped as well as cracked on both sides. Part of the Sawyer combination fuse remains stuck in the fuse hole.

Area of recovery is not known.

Shell is meant for use in 6 pounder Sawyer rifle.
