The body of this shell has moderate pitting and light rust with heavy pitting and some light material loss in the area of the nose above the upper bourrelet. The lower portion has the copper sabot, bolt and three prongs. The lower bourrelet and copper sabot have file marks creating a single flame groove. This was done in an attempt to increase the combustion of this type of round. Only ¼ of these shells would explode when fired. The nose still retains some of the wooden fuse plug.
Shell was recovered at Spotsylvania.
Shell is meant for use in 3-inch Ordnance Rifle.
