This shell was cast and then loaded with case shot through a hole on the side which is now plugged with iron, hence the name “side-loader.” The body of this shell is mostly smooth with light pitting and rust. There are some small amounts of material loss on the nose near the fuse hole. Also, about a 3rd of the sabot is missing. The fuse hole still has threads for the fuse adaptor. Center of base has typical mold dimple as found on Confederate shells.

This shell was recovered in the Wilderness.
